Growing Pains set out to unpack Brian's experience of growing up and the painful realisations that are part and parcel of maturing, the EP delving into generational trauma, family dynamics and the realisation that everyone has their own issues. Brian explains, "it's painful to realise things can't always go your way," as reiterated in his songs 'Time I Leave,' 'Teething' and 'Blind.'
Three years in the making, the EP came together with the help of fellow producer/artist friends and family including featured artists Goya Gumbani, Natanya Popoola and Brian's good friend, London-based artist Jkarri, who helped to compose, produce and mix tracks. The last track 'Willing and Able' was also the collective effort of Klein, Brian's older sister Joviale and Jkarri.
Big on visuals, Brian created the artwork for his EP and singles himself featuring photographs from his family's archives.
A video for 'Time I Leave' directed by Ethan & Tom (Jeshi, Wu-Lu & Louis Culture) was also released during the campaign and received glowing praise from The Face, Dance Wax, Groovement and more.
This year, Brian dropped a 'Loso Na Madesu' remix package featuring Lewis OfMan alongside a video directed by Harry Deadman (Golden Vessel, REMI & Baro Sura) to prime his listeners and set the scene for new music.
Next up is an exciting two part mixtape project titled, Anywhere, But Here With You, with the first instalment set to release in November 2024. The Project is Brian's most nuanced and eclectic sounding work to date which explores the awkwardness of certain thoughts, feelings and conversations one has within their subconscious. As Brian describes, "is an amalgamation of the things I should have said, could have said, tried to say but didn't and couldn't get it right when it mattered. It's only when you stop and look around do you realise how far you've come and pay attention to all the times you said you would do better with another chance." Collaborators include Wiki, Felix of Paris Texas, Jerry Paper, Paul White and more. The campaign will also consist of exciting visuals shot around the world – Paris, Tokyo, London, NYC and LA.
