It’s the greeting heard ’round the world, as musical wunderkind Sailorr crafted 2024’s sharpest ode to a destructive romance with “Pookie’s Requiem.” The track has quickly propelled Sailorr up the musical ranks, garnering over 12 million streams on Spotify alone and readily becoming a TikTok darling. The remix will undoubtedly fan the viral single’s flames, though Sailorr’s follow-up cut “W1LL U L13” is already making its rounds, cracking the 1.5 million mark on Spotify in less than two weeks of its release. “Pookie’s Requiem” saw another jolt, as Sailorr’s “From The Block” performance of the single also cracked the million mark on YouTube. Sailorr is not your average Alt-R&B musician. Her story is layered, her talent is limitless, and as she enters the next iteration of her career, we are witnessing in real time the rise of a superstar. It’s time to set sail.
Raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Sailorr is the product of two Vietnamese parents who emigrated to the States before she was born. “My dad owns a seafood restaurant, and my mom owns some salons,” she explains, “and it was very much a situation where they wanted a better life and they had to just build it brick by brick.” Sailorr and her big sister took a page from their parents’ playbook and once home life teetered on toxic, they moved out when Sailorr was just ten years old and her sister was eighteen. The two moved to Miami for a year, as Sailorr watched her big sister graduate early and put herself through dental school. While Sailorr was influenced by her sister’s musical tastes like Destiny’s Child, she found her own inspiration through Lauryn Hill, Andre3000, and Erykah Badu, as well as the godfather of Chicago Drill, Chief Keef. Eventually, Sailorr had her own aspirations in mind. “I told my sister I wanted to move back up to Jacksonville,” she explains. “During middle school and high school I attended an art school there for musical theater. I wanted to be on Broadway.” As graduation approached, Sailorr began auditioning for various conservatories across the country. During her second round at The Theatre School at DePaul University, she had an epiphany. “Literally on the way to the callback, I was like, ‘I kind of hate this. I don’t want to do musical theater anymore,'” she recalls. “I was not going into debt for acting, bro, that sounds stupid. So then I literally took a flight home, and was like, ‘Yeah, let me just graduate high school, stack up this bread and just figure it out. That’s when I discovered music production.”
Holding a series of jobs to fund her music, Sailorr began experimenting with her sound as both a producer and an artist, performing at local shows and open mics. She entered into the Soundcloud ecosystem (Sailorr is a nod to Sailor Moon), finding her footing digitally through the platform and connecting with more talent. She ultimately met her management team through the Soundcloud network and later found herself in Los Angeles ready to formally start her career. In the middle of 2024, Sailorr dropped a handful of loosie song snippets on TikTok. “I was teasing so many songs at that point to where it was just like, ‘Okay, these are the five songs that I really love right now. I don’t know if these are ever gonna come out, but I’m just gonna tease them.'” Toward the close of 2024, she released her infectious “Pookie’s Requiem,” the quintessential breakup anthem that leans on inspiration from Requiem of a Dream, which Sailorr describes as a painful ass film. “I watched that film right after a bad breakup,” she adds. “And I was like, ‘Damn I really identify with this.’ And also, just struggling with addiction, like, whether that be with sex, love, substances, whatever. I feel like anybody can identify with just trying to unlearn unhealthy habits, and really facing that and so “Pookie’s Requiem” was a direct reflection of what I was struggling with at the time.'”
Sailorr’s sound is curated by the world around her, where fantasy meets reality, all while maintaining unbridled authenticity. Up next is her forthcoming debut project. In her words, “I realize that I spent a lot of my life struggling with my identity because I never really identified with being super feminine or super masculine,” she advises. “And so, in all sorts of ways I’ve always felt, even in my music, that I’m still learning to truly be fully vulnerable and present. But I have the audacity to think I can do everything.”
