Luis Urías is a professional infielder for the Seattle Mariners. Born in Magdalena de Kino, Mexico, Luis signed as an international free agent in 2013. He worked his way up the minor league system with the Padres and played in the All-Star Futures Game. In 2017, Luis joined the Mexico national baseball team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. He was later traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2019, logging his first career walk-off hit in 2021.
After suffering a hamstring injury on opening day in 2023 with the Brewers, Luis was traded to the Boston Red Sox, joining their active roster on August 4. During his Red Sox tenure, Luis hit the first grand slam of his major league career on August 17, and another one on August 19. These two at-bats made history as Luis became the first MLB player to hit grand slams in consecutive plate appearances since 2009. Luis’ story is the perfect example of steadfast determination and hard work paying off.
