Sarasadat “Sara” Khadem is a renowned chess player who holds the titles of International Master and Women’s Grandmaster. Born in Tehran, Iran, she was introduced to chess at the age of eight and since then has achieved a remarkable chess career, winning several women’s and junior championships. She represented Iran in the 2012, 2014 and 2016 Women’s Chess Olympiads.
In 2022, Sara made her mark by deciding not to wear a hijab during the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, an act that defied the rules in Iran. In response, Iranian authorities issued an arrest warrant for her and demanded that she express her repentance in order to return to Iran. However, Sara refused to do so and decided to remain in Spain.
Despite the difficulties, Khadem remains committed to her chess career. She currently plans to continue playing under the Iranian flag. As she continues her chess career, Sara hopes to be a voice for change in her country.
