Dirty Projectors has been a mainstay in the pop and indie rock worlds since the band's inception in 2002. Two of the group's albums, Bitte Orca (2009) and Swing Lo Magellan (2012), are widely regarded as classics of the 2000s and 2010s.
The band has played at most of the major music festivals in the world, from Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza to Glastonbury, Primavera, Roskilde, and Fuji Rock. They've also performed at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, the Barbican in London, Kunsthalle in Berlin, and countless other venues.

Dirty Projectors' list of collaborators include Bjork (Mount Wittenberg Orca, 2011) and David Byrne ("Knotty Pine," 2009), and the band's founder and leader David Longstreth has co-written / produced with Solange, Major Lazer and Rihanna/Kanye West/Paul McCartny.
Longstreth, who studied classical composition at Yale, has written contemporary music for chamber groups Bang On A Can and yMusic. Song Of The Earth (2025) is a new work composed by David Longstreth and performed by Dirty Projectors and s t a r g a z e. The Los Angeles Philharmonic performed its US premiere in a sold out show at Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2024.
