The musical instincts of compelling Palestinian-Canadian singer/songwriter Nemahsis began when she was young. As music was not played in her family home, when Nemah found music she found it for herself, which made her discovery all the sweeter and more startling. Growing up on a farm in Milton, Ontario, Nemah was born into a close knit family with 5 brothers and sisters all one year apart; a rural upbringing that shapes much of her artistic identity. Her songs are tales of escape and retreat, self-acceptance, denial and, ultimately redemption. She released her debut single,"what if i took it off for you?," in 2021, which recounts the experience of being exploited by a global campaign without compensation, presented as an 'opportunity for the community'; little did she know then, but this would be a reoccurring theme during her early career and one that cements her impact as a voice that many look to. Just last October, she was dropped from her label for standing with Palestine at the onset of the current genocide. This unlawful termination of her record deal pushed Nemahsis to remain fully independent in wake of her debut album, Verbathim, set to release Friday, September 13th, 2024. Though her music has found a massive audience socially, that hasn't been her motive. Nemahsis says: "You can tell it's my therapy, right?… Whenever a string is hit on a guitar or key on a piano it sends me somewhere and I will know within seconds which story to tell." Just 3 years later, Nemah continues to find audience in mass; her songs continue to reflect the times and provide a soundtrack that contextualizes the rhetoric of human experience, and the nuance of being a Palestinian hijabi making pop music in the West. With her recent single "stick of gum" pegged as one of Spotify's best songs of 2024, Nemah continues to allude to the much-anticipated Verbathim which features production from Noah "40" Shebib and Michael Uzowuru. If her lyrical capacity places the music currently in 2024, her song craft is effortlessly and affectingly timeless. The only thing that Nemah demands of her musical career is that it is conducted on her terms. The world has been shaken yet again and divisions are being ironed out online by a generation that understands differences cannot be defined from one perspective, they must be shared.
